Microsoft merges its Copilot apps into one
Archive · Issue of 14 August 2026

What happened
On 13 August Microsoft started rolling out a single Copilot app that replaces its separate consumer and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps. Web and mobile came first, with the Windows and Mac apps following from mid-September. The work version moves to a new address, copilot.cloud.microsoft (Petri, GeekWire). Staff can keep a work and a personal account in the same app, with the data kept apart.
On the same day, CEO Satya Nadella said Microsoft would bundle Chat, Cowork, Autopilots and Code into one platform that quarter, and that it has passed 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licences (Netzwoche).
Why it matters for your business
For business accounts, Microsoft called the change “mostly cosmetic”: new icon, new name, new address (GeekWire). Microsoft says security, compliance, privacy and admin controls stay the same, and existing chats move across automatically (Petri).
The risk is confusion. With one app holding both accounts, a team member can easily paste a customer file into their personal Copilot instead of the work one. Only the work account carries your company’s data protection. Microsoft marks it with a “Work” label and a green shield (Microsoft Learn).
Consumer users lose some features on 18 August, including Group Chat and Podcasts. Deep Research is being retired for consumers but stays for business accounts (Windows Central).
The Swiss angle
Copilot Chat comes at no extra cost with Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard and Premium (Microsoft Learn). The paid Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on is listed at CHF 14.57 per user per month on annual billing, shown as reduced from CHF 17.00, excluding VAT (Microsoft Switzerland).
Update, October 2026: Microsoft’s Swiss page still lists the CHF 14.57 price.
What to do
Send your team a two-line note: “Copilot has a new icon and address. For work, always sign in with your work account and look for the green shield.” If you manage Microsoft 365 yourself, Microsoft recommends telling staff about the change and testing the new desktop app with a few users first (Petri).
