ChatGPT can now read files from SharePoint, Box and Dropbox

What happened

On 10 September 2026 OpenAI added Box, Dropbox and SharePoint to ChatGPT’s Library, next to Google Drive, which was already there. Users can browse and search files in those services from inside ChatGPT instead of uploading them again each time. A day earlier, OpenAI added sharing for the Library: you can share files and folders with specific people and give them Viewer or Editor access. Both changes are listed in OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes. The storage connections are listed for the Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, Healthcare and Enterprise plans, on the web.

Why it matters for your business

Most Swiss SMEs keep their documents in SharePoint (through Microsoft 365) or in Dropbox. Until now, asking ChatGPT about a price list, a contract template or last year’s offer meant downloading the file and uploading it again. Now a team member can point ChatGPT at the file where it already lives.

That saves time. It also changes who can see what. If ChatGPT can reach your SharePoint, the question becomes which folders it can reach and who in your team can ask about them. OpenAI’s release notes don’t list the admin controls in detail, so check them in your workspace settings before you connect anything.

The same week, OpenAI also launched a “Data plugin” for ChatGPT Work and Codex, which answers business questions from connected data sources and builds dashboards. That is aimed at firms with data in proper systems, not spreadsheets on a desktop.

The Swiss angle

ChatGPT’s business plans are available in Switzerland. Connecting SharePoint means documents stored in Microsoft’s data centres are read by a second provider, OpenAI. Under the Swiss Data Protection Act you need to know where personal data goes, so treat client folders, HR files and anything with health or salary data as off-limits until you have checked your plan’s data terms.

What to do

If you use ChatGPT Business and SharePoint, connect one folder with non-personal material first, such as product sheets or price lists. Leave HR and client folders unconnected. Write down who switched it on and which folders are connected.
