AI agents can now complete checkout on Shopify stores

Archive · Issue of 2 October 2026

What happened

On 28 September, Shopify let AI agents that run in a shopper’s web browser complete checkout on eligible Shopify stores (Shopify developer changelog, PYMNTS). An agent can now read the checkout, change details such as the delivery address or shipping option, and place the order once the buyer confirms. Shop Pay works too, so saved payment and shipping details can be used. Before this, agents could search products and fill a cart, but not pay.

Shopify named Meta’s Muse and Instinct’s personal agent as partners (TechCrunch). According to the changelog, merchants do not need to set anything up.

Why it matters for your business

Some shoppers will no longer read your product page. Their assistant will. It will compare your product with others using the text it can read: title, sizes, materials, price, stock, delivery times and return terms. If that information sits in an image, a PDF or a vague description, the agent may pick a competitor with clearer data.

This is early. Few people in Switzerland shop this way today. But fixing product data costs little, and it also helps human shoppers and Google.

The Swiss angle

  • Availability: Shopify has not said which countries the agent checkout covers. The changelog speaks of eligible stores without listing criteria.
  • Payments: Shopify’s help centre lists Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and TWINT as available to Swiss merchants using Shopify Payments (Shopify Help Center). Whether an agent can complete a TWINT payment is not stated.
  • Cost: no extra fee was announced.
  • Languages: if you sell in German, French and Italian, check that each language version of your product data is complete, not only the main one.

What to do

Pick your ten best-selling products. For each, check that the title, price in CHF, sizes or variants, stock level, delivery time and return terms are written out as plain text on the product page. Fix the gaps this month.
