Scribe review: click-by-click guides without the typing

Verdict: Writing down a computer job means a screenshot and a sentence for every click, and nobody has the time. Scribe does both while you work. Use the free plan for any job done in a web browser. Pay for Pro only if you need desktop programs, your own logo or PDF export. Record with test data: Scribe stores everything in the US.
How we assessed this: vendor documentation, published pricing and independent reviews.
What it does
Scribe records you doing a task on screen. Each click becomes a numbered step with a screenshot and a line such as “Click Save”. You edit the text and share the guide as a link. It suits jobs done in online software: entering a supplier invoice in bexio, booking holidays, running a report. On Pro and Enterprise, Scribe AI also writes a full SOP from several recordings (Scribe AI FAQ).
In November 2025, Scribe had over 5 million users and 78,000 paying organisations (TechCrunch).
When to use Loom instead. Scribe captures clicks. It can’t capture a job done with your hands or one that needs explaining out loud: setting up a machine, opening the shop, a tricky phone call. For those, use Loom, which films you and writes the SOP from what you say.
Cost
Prices from scribe.com/pricing, in USD. CHF amounts are approximate (USD 1 = CHF 0.83).
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free | Free | Browser capture, links and embeds to share |
| Pro Personal | USD 35 (about CHF 29) | USD 25 (about CHF 21) | Desktop programs and mobile apps, your own logo, PDF export, blur parts of screenshots, voice transcription |
| Pro Team | USD 29 (about CHF 24) per person | USD 23 (about CHF 19) per person | Minimum 5 people; adds comments |
| Enterprise | On request | On request | Hides personal data in screenshots automatically, company log-in, translation |
The plan you need: Basic, for most small teams. Everyone who creates guides installs the free plan. Pro Team only pays off for five or more people who write guides in desktop programs: at the 5-person minimum, it costs USD 115 a month on a yearly plan (about CHF 95).
Setup
From Scribe’s help centre (Scribe help):
- Install Scribe from the Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
- If your browser asks, allow Scribe on all sites. It needs this to record your clicks (Scribe help).
- Click the Scribe icon, then Start capture. Steps appear in a side panel as you work.
- Click Complete Capture, then edit and share.
To turn the guide into an SOP in your own format, paste its text into Claude or ChatGPT with the prompt in our SOP guide. That works on the free plan.
Good at
- Speed and accuracy. Recording replaces the typing. Button names match the screen because they come from your clicks.
- A free plan that does the core job for browser-based work.
Not good at
- Decisions. It records what you clicked, not why. Add the “if this, then that” rules afterwards, or let your AI assistant ask you about them.
- Desktop programs on the free plan. Programs installed on your computer, such as desktop Excel or till software, need Pro and the Scribe desktop app.
- Languages. Built-in translation into German, French and Italian is Enterprise only (Scribe help). Copy the text into your AI assistant and translate it there instead. If your software is in German or French, record one short test guide and check the wording before you roll it out.
- Sensitive screens. Screenshots show everything. Blurring starts with Pro Personal; automatic hiding is Enterprise only. On the free plan, record with test data.
Swiss check
- Available in Switzerland: yes, billed in USD.
- Data location: United States, with contract terms adapted for the Swiss Data Protection Act (Scribe DPA). There is no option to store data in Switzerland or the EU.
- AI: Scribe’s AI runs on OpenAI. OpenAI doesn’t train on your Scribe data and deletes it after 30 days (Scribe AI FAQ).
- What to do:
- Record with a test customer, not real client records.
- Don’t record screens with salaries, health data or client bank details. If you must, blur them (Pro plans) before you share.
- List Scribe as a service provider in your privacy notice, and say that data goes to the US.
Alternatives
- Cheaper: the AI assistant you already pay for. Talk the job through into the microphone of your AI app, then let Claude or ChatGPT write the SOP with our SOP writer skill. No screenshots, CHF 0 extra, and the data stays in your existing business account.
- Cheaper for a small team that needs desktop capture: Tango. Also records your clicks and builds guides. Free for up to 5 shared workflows. Pro costs USD 22 per person a month for 1 to 2 people, or USD 15 from 3 people, billed yearly (about CHF 18 or CHF 12.50), with no 5-seat minimum (Tango pricing).
